This is because when you actively try to impress someone, you end up doing the opposite. For example, a man trying to impress a woman by showing off his brand new car is only going to repel her because it sub-communicates that you have little value and you’re trying to win her over.
Instead, the best way to impress a woman is to give her the chance to observe you at your best. For instance, if you’re in a band and you’re playing guitar on stage, she’ll be able to observe you and this will build attraction.
The big difference in the band situation is the motive behind playing guitar. If you’re playing guitar to impress her, it will have the opposite effect. However, if you are on stage because you’re performing a show in front of a crowd, it will impress her because you’re not doing it specifically for her.
