There is a salmonella bacteria known as salmonellosis. Most of the people that get salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pains. These usually occur with 8 to 72 hours after infection. The illness will usually last 4 to 7 days in length. Most infected people will recover without receiving any treatment. In some cases, if the diarrhea becomes severe a person may become severely dehydrated and need medical treatment. The person will then need intravenous fluids to treat the dehydration. Sometimes medication will be given to reduce a fever. In rare cases the illness may be so severe that it can be fatal.
