Seminaries nowadays offer a great variety of plans and formats for scholars who are not intending to enter full-time Christian ministry. seminary teaching has become democratized. There are online programs, weekend classes, Christian Degree and cohort-based degrees. There are different programmes designed for students who will not enter established professions like the pastorship upon graduation. And there are satellite campuses and other nontraditional backgrounds that allow pupils to go to seminary without having to move or to vary their lifestyles. The establishment of contemporary seminary college foundations was a direct result of Roman Catholic reforms of the Counter-Reformation after the Council of Trent which insisted on the betterment of the instruction of clergy through the creation of Seminaries as live-in foundations under the direct control of senior clergy. Since at least the 4th century there have been Theology seminaries for the education of clergy.
